To teach yourself to roll without tumbling or losing balance you can use a disposible plastic cup full of water. Start from standing and slowly move toward the floor. A regular sit down and stand up might do for starters and later on roll from the prone position and so on to rolling from standing without a spill. Another nice way to roll is to have a partner come at you with a blade or staff and you have to roll to keep safe. Another would be to alternate rolling one another or to roll while keeping hold of each other. (remember the cartoon saying “On the contrary ! I’ve got you” and don’t assume your position grants you any favors)
Use that model of cup so you will be made aware if you tense up or move the hand as you roll by the spilling water…
