When dealing with people with knives we tend to overlook the legs. First check how even a small step changes the relation between the knife hand and your body. A small step forward can ofset the whole move. Don’t consider sides like attack and defence, just move. Another way to broaden this play is to step into the person as you feel his motion. If he moves forward than steping into his leg from the side for starters will take him off balance and you can proceed to remove the threat. Keep the movement so you don’t hurt yourself. Shin against shin can cause fractures with little force and experiment which point of the leg works best for each situation and keep an open mind. If the person is solid than a take down will involve some type of moving him. Maybe a hand wave in front of his face or a shout.  Check this by standing close to each other (forearm length) and move the least amount of leg and body position as posibile. If you move naturally than the eyes don’t see your movement as a threat. If you have intentions to kick instead of moveing into him her them than it will take from your ability. Aggression serves you less than simply staying alive.
