Walking ? Try this: Take a step to any side you choose and close the gap with the other leg so you start and finish with closed legs. Now walk for a bit toward a point in that fashion: One step (comfortable, not overextended) and close the gap and than with the other leg. Now do the same but as you start with the leg also move the body so you end up 90 degrees to where you were in the last step and advance so forward, one to the left and one to the right. Now using a wall, start to walk with your back and face (at a time) to it while maintaining the direction of the body and see how you can free your hip so you can move sideways without tensing up or loosing balance while moving (shoulders and hips are key).  Now with a friend or two walk toward each other and have them walk through you. You job is to step aside in the last moment so they either fall into the gap you created in relation to the distance between you (point of support or leaning depends on how you wish to state it) or completely loose you. Later on add them hitting you with whatever they wish and see how you can move to place yourself where you are able to work better and position them where they find it hard to work. see if you have a preference to either close the distance between you or increase it and work on both. Maintain your calm as you work and do not loose track of the work to take advantage of a flashy show of a back or a hand “wishing to be grabbed” toward you.  As you are working with more than one person remember to mind your surroundings. If you see a problem than continue to look objectively and professionally. If you focus on solving a problem from the outside than you will miss a lot going on around you. If you do not attach too much importance on any one thing than you will be free to see more and you will see things as they are rather than through your opinions. That too is freedom.

  1. I like this comment very much, because it concerns something that is so basic that we already forgot about it: walking. Simple steps. Balance. Relaxation. The ability in a life threatening situation for example, to remain calm and just walk in a controlled, balanced, energetic, maneuverable, and easy pace. People who have experienced high-stress situations know how numb the legs can feel. Nevertheless, this exercise needs some more explanation.

    If I take a step and then close the gap again, then this is understood. But what exactly is the meaning of doing this near to a wall, with my back or my front to the wall, and being able to change the direction in a 90 degree ankle? This is unclear. Does it mean, for example, I am with my back to the wall, and take a first step with the leg leg and close with the right? Then I try to come to a position where my front faces the wall and my first step comes with the right foot and the left closes?

    Please explain this practice.

    Another thing on observation. My Arabic teacher always sits very close to me. He is a small and energetic man, who thinks of himself as fearless. His body language suggests a powergame with his student (me), because he uses his hands a lot in rapid and fast motions in front of my face and touching me to explain matters. This makes me uneasy, although no physical damage happens. The notion of hand close to my face makes me unease, the body language of power (showing power by crossing border / nearness) makes my mind nervous and imbalanced. Its interesting!
