When you are practicing your breath holding after the exhale phase there is a gag or throat clenching effect when we think the air supply is in danger (you feel a need to inhale) or at times we stop the exhale or inhale abrubtly and thus the throat clenches. This tension in the throat reflects to the chest and lungs and makes it harder to handle the situation and gives us the feeling as we are being choked. Next time you are aware of your breath try to breath softly without sharp pauses. It will open a new time frame for dealing with less air and give you more room to play in the head department.
