When you are prolong your breath in cycles as in 5 steps inhale 5 steps pause 5 steps exhale and so on try to breath slowly and after a while you will know how much you need without taking in too much so it tenses you up from within. Usually we inhale and relax on the pause when we are not “doing” any motion. try to relax as you inhale as well and use only the muscles doing the work.
