Rolling with tension: When we roll in class we choose the place and length of the roll and make our bodies pliable. When we roll out of need there is a tension from the initial ressistance to the force applied on us (body or what we think we see). To learn to be more relaxed in your rolls, Roll with some tension and in various constraints: For example tense up your legs and roll, tense up the abdomen and the neck alone or any other combination and see how you fare. Another method is to keep a forced form like rolling out of a lever. For example Stand and pick up one foot and roll to the ground and up without the leg touching the ground. Roll while you hold hand in hand or both hands held at the back or neck. Roll with your eyes closed and holding a knife in hand or pressed between your legs or any other crook. Roll with a bag on your back (or your suitcase, whatever makes sense to you) and so on. Remember the clothes and things we carry change our form and we need to see each moment what we are and not consolt a past memory.
