Consider your movements as you reach for the light switch. Are you standing or moving too far or too close and the arm has to cmpensate for it ? Do you start the movement with your shoulder or with the hand which touches the switch ? If you start with the shoulder you are tensing a part of you before hand (yes I know there is a pun here) and if you start the movement with the hand you only activate what you must. Note how you move and apply this to anything. For example if you reach for a gun in someone elses holster and are afraid to be close to him than you will create tension and lack of movement which harm you and make the people around you notice your actions and become tensed up. Another example is when you are close to someone and go to hit their stomack or hips, you need only move the elbow and form the right shape with the wrist and fingers. If you engage the shoulder or move your eyes to focus on the target you become tense and people will know your intension.
Another way to use this is to release only the part or lever (joint or tissue) which is getting the tension (lock lever or just force) as the body remains upright and can navigate better to survive the situation. For example if someone is bending your elbow behind your back you can join the movement and add your other elbow between his legs as you releas yourself and solve the problem.
