In the room you are now staying check the walls and furniture. The cloth on the bed and the books on the self. From where you are now standing or sitting, reach out for the nearest object you can throw and see what you can do with this idea. Go to the next one and the next and remember to alway look for the next mark (I recommend you get a copy of Personal Protection (DVD)  by Konstantin Komarov) it goes over the mental process of staying alive in the cross hairs better than anything else I have seen. If the object cannot be thrown you can swing or stab with it. Lock the arms of the attacker with the legs of a chair for example of just place it between you and them. In the case of protecting your house you need to change the odds in your favor and making a lot of visible noise can be good of course depending on how you chose the location.  Consider how you can for example throw a water bottle through the window to signal for help and unnerve a thief but it will escalate the hostile mood of a rapist or any other violent criminal. You have to be sensitive and to trust yourself as you choose and act to survive. If the other has the gun or knife it is a bad situation but only if you give up is it over. Another tactic can be to place unseen defenses in the house or on your person. For example every one can buy a bottle of oil solvent which will help the attacker think of himself and not about you as Mikhail states. you can keep this liquid or anything that works the same way around the house in harmless looking flasks or any other container and use them if needed. This is just one idea and the house is full of things you can use. From the glass in the window that can be turned into knives with a simple kick or the heavy metal watch on your forearm. Keep thinking and moving and the answer will come from your connection with your breath.
