Force and speed are visibly important in a fight and in life. You cannot move without force and you cannot reach anywhere without speed. We tend to place our senses in a supporting role when we hone ourselves yet our senses and how our mind integrates the input makes all the difference.
Here are four games to do with a partner to better our senses and through that, our lives and ability to act when required.
- Close our eyes and let a partner hold your hand. Let them lead you quietly around and include corners, stairs, obstacles and other points of interest in the game. Use just the touch to convey and to receive what is required and what is ahead and through this touch you will learn to interpret and understand intent and action even before it comes to play. Be careful near stairs and keep your partner in our piece. Remember you are next.
- Close your eyes and stand on one foot. Have a partner push and pull on you using a stick and use your breath to keep calm and exhale what excess tension builds up. Let your body flail to find balance to avoid over bracing and let yourself find balance through breath and movement instead of pulling on yourself from within. Deep relaxation and control will derive from this practice with attentive consistency.
- Lie on the ground with eyes closed. Let a partner move you about. Pull on your limbs, turn you to face up and down as you breathe and let go of excess tension. In time, add your own movements to the manipulation to keep comfortable and after that is reached, add your own intent to the touch and aim to add to the motion instead of blocking and controlling it so you are always able to keep moving even if surprise is on the other side.
- In your abode, close your eyes and perform non dangerous tasks such as moving from room to room by feel alone. Use the feeling in your feet and skin to ascertain where you are and avoid moving too swiftly as to break your nose on a unsuspecting wall. This in time and gentle practice will allow you to see all around you and be less and less surprised and affected from all directions.
