We are born from an aquatic environment and are expected to use our senses and bodies on land right away. Naturally we need to adjust to the outside and the much more prevalent impact of gravity.
In order to survive and conserve energy we source most of our energy and senses to forward locomotion yet in order to achieve balance and through that, health and freedom of movement. We must endeavor to balance the forward with the back and each twist with its mirror picture.
Further thought into this thought process will show that each one of use needs their own patterns and focus as we are on an ever changing development and are always moving from one imbalance to the next.
We will never be perfect as our loved ones remind us 🙂 but we can get closer and closer to the horizon in some ways.
A few points to consider:
- coupling movements together for balance can bring longer lasting effects and consistency without injury and overuse. For example – coupling the pushup with the incline pull-up and the squat with the sliding bridge up.
- Spreading awareness over different elements in a movement. For example, raising your rifle to a shooting position with and without tension in different body parts or using different breath patterns.
- Using less to achieve more – Stand on one leg while you are waiting for the bus or keep one hand at your side while you prepare that sandwich you were dreaming about all day. Less to use equals more attention to what remains.
- Switching senses – Use your hand to gauge the temperature outside instead of looking at a monitor, walk with your eyes closed and sense the different air resistance on your skin, whistle in the dark and listen to the echos telling you a story and smell the earth around you to know the scent of plants that were trampled so you know if someone or something was in your place.
